The latest issue of Monocle magazine is now out and I have included here some of the highlights from the October 2016 issue, which include the Retail Survey Top 20.

For those unfamiliar with the title, Monocle magazine describes itself as “A Briefing on Global Affairs, Business, Culture & Design”.

Page 108 has a feature on the chief executive of Portuguese national airline TAP, the Brazilian-born Fernando Pinto. He is fixing TAP and used to run the Brazilian airline VARIG and like myself, was born in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in the south of Brazil, so a fellow gaúcho.

This issue also includes from page 87 the Monocle Retail Survey Top 20. This surveys looks at the global retail scene from the best new shops, the smartest developers and the most anticipated additions to the retail landscape.

Interestingly they have chosen Gebr Heinemann as the Best duty-free operator as part of the survey, which is in no doubt influenced by the great work done by the German family business in Sydney, Australia (picture below). So congratulations to Heinemann!

Page 118 reveals the Monocle new book: The Monocle Guide to Drinking & Dining. It must be worth checking it out…
